Circle Series
Digital archival photographs, 81/2” x 11,” 2017-2020Circle series is an ongoing photographic project.
This collection explores a range of circular forms in nature, architecture, the studio, and domestic spaces.
I’m not quite sure when I began photographing circular things. I’ve been aware of circles, spheres, hoops, and ring shapes for a very long time. The circle has been an inspiration from ancient to modern times - found in nature (the earth, flowers, spiderwebs...) and industry (the wheel, buttons, bowling balls...). The circle I seek is never the perfect divine, but the more wonky - misshapen organic found thing that appears and surprises when I happen upon it.
The catalyst for this “circular attraction” for this series of photographic images came about by observation and awareness of my personal surroundings. This once peripheral activity has developed into something I identify as important. The photographs in Circle Series reveal the myriad of physical manifestations a round shape can become - in solid form: a shiny mirrored ball; in liquid form: a scrambled egg in a bowl; a spotlight on a brick wall; a luminous transparent stain glass window.
I’m inspired by many photographers, including Irving Penn, Cindy Sherman, Olafur Eliasson, and Emmet Gowan. I’m drawn to these artists for their singular and expansive visions they convey through the medium of photography.
